Panormo village is one of the most beautiful seaside villages of Crete.
It has just the right mix of modern convenience and traditional atmosphere.
Panormo is located in the middle of the North Coast of Crete, 22km east of Rethymno and 55km west of Heraklion.
Its natural port is the centre of three lovely bays, around which the town is situated. The beaches are organised and equipped with sun beds & umbrellas. Water sports are also available. The harbour beach in front of the village is the port of the area, where the boats tie up, this beach is unorganised. The village has all the facilities and amenities; mini-markets, grocery, bakery, pharmacy, a doctor’s office, post office, shops with local products and various shops at very reasonable prices. There are many cafes and restaurants that serve very good quality food.
History of Panormo
Panormo is situated in a historic place.
The existence of an ancient city, is confirmed by the discovery of the imposing basilica of St. Sophia, one of the greatest Christian churches in Greece and the largest in west Crete.
Panormo was called Kastelli of Milopotamos (i.e. Castle of Milopatamos), because of the Genoese castle, that traces are still visible next to the harbor.
In the modern history, Panormo was a center for the transportation of goods produced in the wider region. The area produced large quantities of olive oil and carobs.
The new national road that was constructed in 1970s running next to the village and the construction of the marina in 1980 contributed to the touristic development of Panormo.
Places to visit at Panormos
Visit the lighthouse on the Hondrokavos Cape, about 800m from the center of the village, to enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets you have ever seen.
Also, make sure that you visit the remains of Agia Sophia Church,500m southwest of the village, It was built in the 5th century, the early Christian times, and was excavated in 1948. In its days, it was one of the biggest Christian Royal Churches of Greece.
The industrial monument of “Charoupomylos” (an old carob factory converted into a modern cultural center), situated 20m from Sea La Vie house, offers the possibility to enjoy unique cultural events.
